Zack Hann (me) is a saxophonist and composer based in Brooklyn, NY and New Haven, CT. I lead a multifaceted career that encompasses music performance, composition, production, and education.

My main group is a sax-bass-drums trio with drummer Jacob Patrone and bassist Solomon Gottfried. We have held residencies at Sunrise/Sunset in Brooklyn and Scout’s Coffee Bar in New Jersey. In 2024, we went on tour from New York to Chicago.

As composer, my work draws from 20th-century classical and experimental music, the Great American Songbook, collage music and polyphonic singing traditions. I perform my compositions solo or with my trio or quintet. I also produce music for commercial clients, including a significant body of work for designer David Yurman.

I also play classical music and collaborate with other composers. I have performed with the American Ballet Theatre Orchestra, Metropolis Ensemble, and as part of the New York Philharmonic Biennial. In 2017, I gave the US premiere of Ravishi Nur (“Transmission of Light”), a saxophone concerto by Farangis Nurullah-Khoja, with the New Juilliard Ensemble.

I have performed internationally with the Colburn Orchestra, the Neue Philharmonic, the Alfonso Medela Quartet and with my own quartet.

I have collaborated with many big names in new music, including Nadia Sirota, John Adams, Alan Gilbert, Nico Muhly, Kirk Knuffke, Kalia Vandever, and Brian Marsela.

In 2021, with funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, I produced Steeple City Sound, a three-day music festival in North Adams, Massachusetts that featured groups led by violinist Todd Reynolds and cellist/composer Paul De Jong, plus my own quintet.

I received my Bachelor of Music degree from Juilliard in 2017. Privately, I studied jazz and improvisation with Sam Yahel and currently study composition with Jacob Adler.
